Prompt Engineering 101

Prompts are the foundation of all AI tools, including ChatGPT. How well you can prompt or prompt engineer, defines the value you get from AI platforms.

What is ChatGPT and Prompt Engineering?

ChatGPT and prompt engineering are two tools used to help create conversations with chatbots. ChatGPT stands for Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer, and it is a type of artificial intelligence that helps chatbots understand the context of a conversation. Prompt engineering is a process of carefully crafting different phrases, questions, and statements that a chatbot can use to initiate conversations and respond to user input. This includes writing different prompts for different scenarios and giving the chatbot the ability to generate a variety of responses depending on the user’s input. Prompt engineering also involves testing and refining the prompts to ensure that they are accurate and appropriate for the chatbot’s intended purpose. This process helps the chatbot to become more conversational, and it can be used to create a more natural, interactive dialogue between the chatbot and the user.

What is a prompt?

Broken down, a prompt is the information you feed to an AI to do what you want it to do. For example, here’s a prompt asking ChatGPT to Write me a poem about Donald Trump and The Cat In The Hat.

That’s pretty cool right? But actually, ChatGPT does so much more than an easy poem.

To get better, more accurate and detailed answers you need it to become your ideal source.

Engineering ChatGPT to act as a professional.

Every new ChatGPT chat has no contextual information – no information for what you want it to do.

To show you, say I’m in L.A. and want advice for which restaurants to visit. I’ll ask ChatGPT, “What restaurants can I visit in LA”.

The answer is helpful, but it could be better.

I need ChatGPT to actually become a Travel Guide if I want a really helpful and useful guide.

Let’s try the below prompt that we’ve copied from the Promptstacks database and see what happens.

This answer provides a far better response.

Let’s give one more example a go and see if we can push it to the limit.

I’ll ask it again to act as something and create our answer.

Let’s try this prompt from Promptstacks: Act as a lawyer, debate the pros and cons of {legalising cannabis}, providing valid arguments and refuting opposing points of view, with the goal of helping people gain knowledge and insight. Act like a lawyer in persuasive paragraphing.

In this section, as always, all we need to edit is the section with the opening curly brace to whatever we want.

If I want it to continue the argument, all I need to ask is for it to elaborate or continue.
